SUGAR IS TO DIE FORThu DEC 19 2022

This project reflects on excessive sugar intake through blind box toys that address potential health hazards.

packaging design/character identity

With the promotion of desserts and sweets on social media, sugar consumption has become an indispensable activity, particularly among younger age groups. However, excessive sugar intake can easily lead to addictive symptoms and various health risks. By exploring the influence of popular culture on the younger generation, I have chosen blind boxes as the carrier for this project, as it is a merchandise that effectively engages the target audience.

This project is designed to help with the understanding of the risks of high sugar intake, as well as a reminder to maintain healthy living:

“keep on getting more and more sweets, until you get one of these.”

Character identity

The blind box characters wearing hospital gowns are designed to showcase potential symptoms associated with high sugar intake, including but not limited to acne, sleeping disorders, depression, fatigue, addiction, obesity, and more. They are dressed up with colourful elements of sweets to incite a delightful and approachable appearance. This juxtaposition serves to convey the dual nature of sugary treats—enticing and enjoyable on the surface, yet harmful when consumed in excess.

Assets & Packaging

Blind boxes often come in a series that has random attributes where consumers cannot know in advance what might be within them.

A blind box usually contains:

a character/toy
a description card
vibrant packaging

Blind boxes typically feature uniform, colourful packaging to attract purchases. In this project, they are designed to have the shape of candies to further emphasize the theme.
